For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14

Amazing Anatomy & Physiology

There is something amazing about human anatomy and physiology, yet we tend to take our bodies for granted.  It's in the simple things that I find almost magically: the tender touch when holding hands with someone you love, the smell of a chilly spring day after a rain that triggers a childhood memory, the taste of a delicious meal when surrounded by friends and family.  All of these things are made possible because of the intricate balance of numerous cells working in concert to make us aware of the world around us. Of course there are also other miracles that fascinate me as well: the birth of a baby, the ability of the body to heal after major injuries or diseases, the creative minds that imagine works of art. All of these things are a result of the growth and development of a single cell that grows and divides and multiplies.  From that single cell, a variety of diverse cells emerge - each cell type performing a specific function, communicating with other cells so that the human body can function.

This year we will embark on a journey to study human anatomy and physiology.  The challenge will be to see how structure reflects function.  From cells to tissues to organs to organ systems - at each level structure will dictate the physiology.  Each cell was created for a specific purpose. How this diverse conglomerate of cells assemble to make functional tissues and organs is in itself a work of beauty.

This blog will be used to enhance our study of human anatomy and physiology. Check back frequently for interesting facts and study help.

structures are the nuclei of the cells. The brown filaments
(string like structures) are the processes of cells called
astrocytes.
Where is the hippocampus located? What is the function of the hippocampus?
